Nigerians at risk with cancer would soon heave a sigh of relief as First Lady, Turai Yar’Adua, has concluded plans to seek solution to the scourge, with the unveiling of plans for a N6 billion International Cancer Centre in Abuja.
The plan for the centre was made public on behalf of the First Lady by FCT Minister, Senator Muhammad Adamu Aliero, last Thursday, at a press conference in Abuja. He also used the occasion to announce the Logo/Project of the Centre.
The minister described cancer as a terminal disease, observed that it is made worse by the fact that most hospitals and medical centres in the country, lack diagnostic capacity to quickly detect and treat cancer related infections.
"It is now time to tackle the menace of cancer by taking the bull by the horn, thanks to our inimitable First Lady, whose brainchild it is to seek solution to the scourge."
According to him, the centre would be the first of its kind in the country and West Africa. He explained that the centre was conceptualised by the First Lady after study has been conducted with a visit along with some Nigerian cancer specialists to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre in Houston, Texas, known as one of the largest cancer centres in the world.
He further disclosed that the Centre when completed is expected to have a 250-bed capacity and would constitute an array of departments spread over 7 hectares of land in a prime location of the FCT. The minister, who is the vice chairman of the planning committee, stated that plans are already at an advanced stage for the foundation laying ceremony in June.
"Essentially, it shall be charged with avenues to facilitate early detection, early diagnosis and access to advanced cancer treatment.
"It will be a centre of medical excellence engaging experts in various aspects of cancer who will attend to the more immediate needs of cancer patients such as diagnostics and treatment," he further said.
